Winter Surfing Gear Guide
Here you’ll find everything you need to know about winter surfing wetsuits, wetsuit boots, wetsuit gloves, and wetsuit hoods.
Winter Surfing Wetsuits
Good wetsuit is an essential for cold water surfing. Rip Curl Flashbomb is a top tier choice for a true winter surfing enthusiast. O’Neill Epic 5/4 mm is a solid choice for a budget cold water surfer.
Wetsuit Boots
Wetsuit boots will keep your feet warm in the freezing water. I personally use 7mm Billabong Furnance boot at the moment.
Wetsuit Gloves
The warmest wetsuit gloves are mittens. There are also five finger gloves and “lobster claw” shaped mittens. The warmest glove I’ve used are definitely the O’Neill Psycho Tech 7mm mittens. Rip Curl’s Flashbomb 7/5 mm mittens are also a solid option.
Wetsuit Hoods
The best winter surfing wetsuits have a hood attached to it, but you can also buy a separate wetsuit hood if your wetsuit doesn’t have a hood. I recommend a hood with a vest. Rip Curl’s Flashbomb hood is the best hood I’ve tried.
Cold Water Wax
Choosing the right surf wax for cold water can be a sticky task (sry for the pun). Sticky Bumps Original Cold works best for me. Just remember to apply the wax outdoors since it’s quite soft in room temperature.
